San Jose Convention Center
San Jose Convention Center
The San Jose Convention Center, often referred to as the San Jose Convention Center, is a convention center in San Jose, California, United States. It is named after former Mayor Tom McEnery of San Jose.
The San Jose Convention Center opened in 1989, replacing the Civic Auditorium (then known as the Civic Auditorium) of the city's National Civic. The South Hall opened in 2005 and the Main Hall underwent renovations and expansions in 2013. The San Jose team manages the convention center along with several nearby event centers.
The main exhibit hall has hosted numerous technology conferences and conventions, such as Facebook F8 and Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, while the South Hall has hosted auto shows and political campaign events.
The convention center spans 550,000 square feet (51,000 square meters), with 165,000 square feet (15,300 square meters) of exhibition space, 31 meeting rooms, and banquet facilities for approximately 5,000 guests. There are entrances on West San Carlos Street, Almaden Avenue, and South Market Street. The San Jose Hilton and Marriott hotels are adjacent to the convention center. A two-story corridor connecting the three entrances is called "Park Avenue" on the first floor and "Plaza" on the second floor.
There is an inset main entrance along West San Carlos Street with two famous art installations. The two-story ceramic mural by Linwo Chong (1988) decorates the facade surrounding the entrance. This mural, which looks like a flock of flying birds, consists of over 8,000 red, white, and black tiles manufactured by Royal Copenhagen. An interactive sculpture designed by Korean architect Soo-in Yang stands in the plaza in front of the entrance. A life-size bronze and steel sculpture by Stephen De Staebler hangs in the lobby, created in 1993.
The South Hall is a metal-framed fabric structure that adds 80,000 square feet (7,400 square meters) of exhibition space, totaling 225,000 square feet (20,900 square meters). It can accommodate 11,428 people or 5,333 for exhibitions. Surrounding it is a public parking lot covering 191,668 square feet (17,806.5 square meters). Since its temporary construction in 2005,[7] city leaders have repeatedly requested the demolition of the South Hall; however, the city considers the South Hall crucial for attracting large events to the convention center. The South Hall and the surrounding parking lot are owned by the successor agency of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency (SARA).
The maintenance cost of the South Hall is $38,000 per year, while the estimated demolition cost is at least $1 million.
The convention center is located two blocks from the San Carlos Street exit off State Route 87 and the Almaden Avenue exit off Interstate 280 southbound. State Route 82 also passes through the Convention Center via South Market Street until 2013, when this section was transferred to San Jose. The public convention center parking lot is connected to the convention center. The public surface parking lot is located between West Almaden Avenue and Viola Street, which surrounds the South Hall.
Public transportation is also accessible to the convention center. The Convention Center VTA light rail station is located directly in front of the main entrance of the Convention Center on West San Carlos Street. The station serves the Alum Rock-Santa Teresa and Mountain View-Winchester lines. There are two stops from the Diridon Multi-Modal Station in San Jose. The convention center also offers local and express bus routes, free downtown area shuttles (DASH) from San Jose State University, and Ford GoBike bike share stations across West San Carlos Street.
